Charles Pageward Smith was born in Md. on September 6, 1917 and had completed his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College in 1940. During WWII, Smith served with the 10th Mountain Division as company commander of Company C of the 85th Infantry. Following the war, he earned his doctorate at Harvard and became a noted historian, writer and professor of history who wrote a number of scholarly works on history.
